KAHRAMAA team visits West Lusail District Cooling Plant

1

In fulfillment of its tasks of monitoring the compliance of District Cooling Plants with the required specifications and standards, a monitoring team of the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation “KAHRAMAA", led by Eng. Abdul Aziz Al-Hamadi, Manager of the District Cooling Services Department visited the West Lusail District Cooling Plant which feeds Lusail Mondial Stadium with the cooling capacity required for operation and the area adjacent to the stadium.

The visit aimed at ensuring the readiness of the operating system's commitment to implement the instructions pertaining to the district cooling code and key performance indicators of the district cooling.

Lusail City extends over an area of 38 square km, most of which is covered with district cooling services, with a total cooling capacity expected to reach 500,000 tons for all its areas once they are completed.

It is a smart modern city. It adopts the best and latest smart solutions in the field of sustainable technologies and energy-saving systems. The importance of the district cooling system in the city is to cool all the existing buildings and facilities, where it has been recognized as the most appropriate solution for modern and sustainable cities in promoting a sustainable economy, keeping pace with urban development, protecting the environment, and obtaining the highest levels of reliability in operation at the same time.

The plant was commissioned last July to supply to meet the requirements of Lusail Stadium, the largest one of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, with a cooling capacity of 30000 tons through an integrated network.

It is to be noted that the plant has been designed, accomplished, and set in accordance with the specifications adopted by the District Cooling and key performance indicators published on KAHRAMAA website. The new plant works through an integrated control and monitoring system connected with other operated and upcoming future plants. It works to ensure the high energy performance, continuity, and reliability that ensures the cooling of all buildings without interruption and reduces maintenance and operating costs. It has been also designed to operate treated sewage effluent through an additional purification station to enhance the treated water quality.

Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation “KAHRAMAA" urges all the developers and investors to adopt the district cooling system in their projects, as it is the most efficient system that saves approximately 40% of electricity and 98% of potable water in the case of using treated water compared with the conventional cooling system. The system is also considered one of the most energy systems that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which contributes to reducing the carbon footprint in Qatar.

The District Cooling Services Department at KAHRAMAA works with all district cooling service providers in Qatar to improve the adopted systems to ensure efficient use of resources and achieve the desired benefits for the State and society.
