Star rating system will be applied for energy efficiency of air conditioners in Qatar in July 2016. The star rating system is issued by Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation “KAHRAMAA” through the National Program of Conservation and Energy Efficiency “Tarsheed” in cooperating with Ministry of Municipality and Environment and other concern authorities in the state, in order to efficiently consuming energy of air conditioning devices and reducing harmful carbon emissions rates.
To keep pace with the objectives of the Qatar National Vision 2030 to preserve the state's resources and achieve the comprehensive environmental development, the National Program "Tarsheed" succeeded in accrediting the specifications and technical standards for energy efficiency systems of air conditioners in Qatar, which begins with a three-stars rate and more for "window" devices at a rate of energy efficiency (EER) estimated by 8.5 to be the minimum rate allowed, and a rate of energy efficiency (EER) estimated at 9.5 to be the minimum rate allowed for "Split Unit" devices which begins with a four-stars rating.
The Stars Rating is a global classification sticker on ACs and other devices to define the efficiency of the devices. The energy efficiency increased, electricity consumption and harmful carbon emissions reduced if the air conditioner have more stars. If the device doesn’t have the label of energy efficiency, it means that the device consumes high energy which exceeds the limit of conservation. The stars rating posters of energy efficiency for ACs have been launched to meet customer service with promoting the awareness of the approved classifications. The stars rating poster provides the customer with reliable methods of comparison between the other devices according to their efficiency in electrical energy consumption.
KAHRAMAA, through “Tarsheed”, endeavors to confirm the stars rating posters for electrical devices to educate the customer about the procedure of stars calculation within the material cost of the device and its benefits of long last using, minimizing the building energy consumption, saving better environment, reducing the consumption bill cost, and having better efficient working…etc. the stars card also includes key information about the product such as type and brand of the device, electric power consumption and specification of the test.
The stars rating system will be applied soon also on other electrical devices such as washing machines, fridges and heaters. The description of stars numbers on the card of the device show its efficiency and consumption to electrical energy.
A campaign is arranged for educating about stars system of ACs and calculation methods for energy efficiency of devices via various media like TV channels, newspapers, magazines and cinemas to educate and guide the audience about the ways of choosing the best devices with high quality that meet their needs.
Tarsheed collaborates with Carrefour brunches in 3 malls to raise awareness of campaign through available internal screens and signboards located there and via distributing posters and plastic bags for the items purchased at Carrefour as well as arranging a stand for displaying information and specifications related to devices followed-up with other campaigns in other malls to reach as much as they can of targeted audiences.
It is worth mentioning that KAHRAMAA, through the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency “Tarsheed”, is working to develop and apply the standards of efficient consuming for electrical devices and plumping equipment in line with international standards in this regards to reduce electricity and water consumption rate without compromising the standards of the decent life for citizens and residents and for better living for the coming generations according to Qatar National Vision 2030.
