Inspection tour to KAHRAMAA strategic projects

HE Dr. Mohammed Bin Saleh Al-Sada, Minister of Energy and Industry and HE Eng. Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari, President of Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation "KAHRAMAA" paid an inspection tour to some of KAHRAMAA strategic vital projects on Monday 15th February 2016. They were accompanied with Directors, Managers, and engineers.

This tour was meant to get acquainted of status and progress of the most important strategic vital projects implemented by Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation "KAHRAMAA" to strengthen the basic infrastructure of electricity and water sectors, to ensure the sustainability and reliability of supplies. Beside KAHAMAA efforts to develop the electricity and water services in the state and to meet the growing demand for these vital services.

The tour has been started with a visit to Al-Duhail Superstation 11/66/220 commissioned on March 2015 at a total cost of 255 million QR. It feeds Duhail area, Wadi Al-Banat and other vital facilities.

The next step was to KAHRAMAA Awareness Park. The Minister reviewed the technology used. The facility demonstrates the processes of electricity generation and water desalination from the sea and serves as an innovative source of entertainment and knowledge, especially for children. The park has been designed to serve as an education centre for children, so that they understand the socio-economic and environmental cost of electricity and water, which they consume in their daily lives. The park was felicitated with various awards.

The tour included a visit to the Strategic Mega reservoirs at Rawdat Rashid.

The Project is meant to secure water supplies in Qatar. The strategic project of the mega reservoirs is considered the largest expansion of Qatar water storage ever. It aims to increase Qatar water strategic storage till 2026 (first stage). The project consists of 24 reservoirs at a total capacity of 2300 Million Gallons. The project includes the installation of 650 km pipelines with large diameters to form a spine joining all the key desalination plants together at the five specific reservoirs sites.

The capacity of each reservoir is 100 MIG which is considered the largest concrete reservoir in the world. each concrete reservoir will be sized at 150 m by 300 m by 12 m deep. The reservoirs are unique in type and design. Each site consists of substantial pumping station and infrastructure to serve them.

H.E. Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nasser Al-Thani the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, laid the foundation stone of the Strategic Mega Reservoirs Project in May 2015.

The total cost of the project awarded contracts is QR 17 bn. 55% of contractors are Qatari companies. The project is due for final commissioning and operation in the second quarter of 2018.

Al-Sada appreciated government efforts for the development of electricity and water sector and the support of HE Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nasser Al-Thani the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. “KAHRAMAA endeavors to provide high quality services for customers by commissioning vital project to meet the increasing demand” he said.​
