KAHRAMAA: The use of district cooling system in the 2022 Qatar World Cup stadiums

1

District cooling system in Al Bayt Stadium is the most energy efficient

Abdulaziz Al Hammadi, Director of the District Cooling Services Department at the Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA), and a team of engineers visited the district cooling plant at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor to follow up on the work progress.

Al Bayt Stadium is one of the Qatar 2022 World Cup stadiums. It uses district cooling technology to cool the stadium through a central cooling station with a cooling capacity of 30,000 tons. The station distributes chilled water directly to a large number of air treatment units allocated within the stadium to ensure the required temperature in fan stands and the stadium floor. It is also worth noting that the station uses sustainable water resources, such as the use of treated wastewater for cooling purposes, as well as for the irrigation of green areas through treated water purification station located in the garden of Al Bayt Stadium. This contributes to the provision of desalinated potable water and bolsters the sustainability of water sources in the state.

The use of the district cooling system in stadiums is an innovative, environmentally friendly technology and one of the most efficient, sustainable, and energy-saving systems. It saves about 40% of electricity and 98% of potable water when compared to traditional cooling solutions.

KAHRAMAA works to enhance water security in the State of Qatar by shifting to the use of treated wastewater instead of potable water in all district cooling plants, which is considered the best sustainable system in the region and one that supports the sustainability of water resources. KAHRAMAA also uses the latest equipment and smart monitoring and control systems that provide high energy performance. The District Cooling Services Department at KAHRAMAA also works with all district cooling service providers in Qatar to improve district cooling systems to optimize the use of resources in a manner that benefits the state and society.
