KAHRAMAA celebrates Earth Hour

1

The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA) is all set to observe one hour of darkness on March 29 to mark Earth Hour, joining world communities to protect environment. The earth hour will be observed from 8.30- 9.30 PM.

With the guidelines of Qatar National Vision 2030 and National Development Strategy (2011- 2016), KAHRAMAA has taken many initiatives for sustainability and environment.

On this occasion, KAHRAMAA has called upon all the sectors to switch off the electricity showing solidarity with the movement.

KAHRAMAA is committed to its responsibility for providing sustainable resources for electricity and water for the benefits of the nation and for improving the quality life for the generations to come in line with QNV 2030 which calls for environmental management and protection aimed at ensuring harmony and consistency with economic and social development.

Keeping in view the conservation and rationalization of natural resources, KAHRAMAA in coordination with Ministry of Environment is phasing out high glow more energy- consuming lamps with energy- saving lamps. The first phase is focused on banning the import of 100 watts and 75 watts lamps followed by the second phase to stop importing bulbs of 60 watts capacity, followed by the third phase to stop 40 watts bulbs from being brought in. This action will result in carbon emission cut and save vital resource.

The National program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed) which was launched as a campaign in year 2012 under the patronage of His Highness the Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al- Thani, is marching towards achieving good result. It has achieved a great progress in terms of electricity and water conservation in 2013. Electricity per capita consumption decreased by 10% and water per capita consumption decreased by 6% as compared to year 2012.

The prime target of Tarsheed is to reduce the per capita water and electricity consumption in Qatar by 35% & 20%, respectively up to 2017. The per capita consumption of water and electricity is one of the highest in the world.

On the renewable energy initiatives, KAHRAMAA approach has moved beyond keeping an open outlook on emerging new technologies in solar to embracing and formulating plans and implementing new projects. KAHRAMAA has announced its first renewable energy project in 2012 by introducing the project as strategic option. KAHRAMAA has undertaken the project as a leading step towards the gradual adoption of more sustainable techniques to produce 200 MWs by 2020 which will be equivalent to 2% of the then total power generation in Qatar.

The District Cooling Services (DCS) department at KAHRAMAA which came into existence to implement QNV 2030 has focused on energy and water synergies and efficiencies by promoting district cooling technologies, policies and activities in Qatar.

District Cooling is a cost effective and environment-friendly technology which uses 30 to 40 percent less energy than conventional refrigeration system, resulting heavy reduction in CO2 emissions.  As the technology needs more water , Qatar’s Permanent Water Resources Committee (PWRC) has recommended using only Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE) in all existing and upcoming DC projects which in turn will save desalinated water.
