1

Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation “KAHRAMAA” celebrated the World Environment Day which falls on June 5 every year. It was marked with many activities and events to raise awareness of the importance of preserving the environment. This year's World Environment Day theme is "Beat Plastic Pollution - If You Can’t Reuse it, Refuse it”

On this occasion HE. Eng. Essa bin Hilal Al-Kuwari KAHRAMAA President of KAHRAMAA said:” KAHRAMAA celebration of the World Environment Day 2018 comes within the Corporation commitment to achieve Qatar National Vision 2030, which was established by His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar. The fourth pillar of the said Vision is devoted for environmental development and environmental conservation for future generations. "

KAHRAMAA President added that KAHRAMAA attaches great importance to the environment and to reducing harmful emissions. He also noted that the Corporation succeeded through the National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed) in reducing carbon emissions by 10.2 million tons since the launch of the program in 2012 and until the end of 2017. Besides, KAHRAMAA is keen to consolidate and spread the culture of sustainability among all segments of society.

KAHRAMAA Health, Safety and Environment Department launched on this occasion an awareness-raising competition on this year's World Environment Day theme “Beating Plastic Pollution”, to increase KAHRAMAA staff awareness and urge them to change daily habits to reduce plastic pollution, which is considered as one of the most dangerous pollutants that have a great impact on the environment and society.

KAHRAMAA is working on ensuring the achievement of its corporate objective of increasing social awareness and compliance with environmental requirements. It succeeded in implementing the recycling program for paper waste to preserve the environment (about 37.5 tons of paper in 2017), in addition to the electricity network Electromagnetic Emissions Assessment and Monitoring program to ensure that these emissions don’t have negative effects on the environment and the health of the individuals. As well, KAHRMAA transformed the environmental permit system from a paper system into an electronic one because of its positive impact on the environment, its speed and services accuracy. KAHRAMAA also works hard to increase its staff environmental awareness through training programs in environmental fields such as carbon footprint, air and soil pollution and others

Measures have also been adopted to ensure the safe disposal of hazardous waste in KAHRAMAA through the conclusion of a hazardous waste treatment contract with Mesaieed Hazardous Waste Treatment Center.

The World Environment Day is a global platform to increase awareness and take measures on pressing issues ranging from marine pollution and global warming down to sustainable consumption and wildlife crimes. Millions of individuals have participated over the years in this event which helped to bring a change in consumer habits as well as in national and international environmental policies.
