KAHRAMAA launched early alarm system at desalination plants

Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation “KAHRAMAA” installed early warning system at the desalination plants intakes to measure radioactive contaminants.

It comes within KAHRAMAA commitment to apply the highest HSE standards at all sight and endeavor to achieve its mission of “Providing High Quality and Sustainable Electricity and Water for Better Living in Qatar”.
The strategic project, a first of its kind in the Gulf, is part of Qatar water security system. It aims to measure any radioactive contamination and ensure water inflows to these stations are free of any radioactive contamination. The total cost of the project is QR 19 m.
The alarm system has been installed at desalination plants at Ras Abo Fontas, Ras Laffan, Dukhan, Pearl, and Halul. It is connected with all desalination facilities.
The system measures the three radioactive contaminants of alpha, beta and gamma rays. It contains sensors to measure any radioactive contamination at facilities intakes.
The system is connected with the National Water Control System (NWCC), Ministry of Environment, and relevant Security centers. There is another system attached to it that will take water samples automatically for laboratory tests to confirm the readings. The system includes data analysis and storage, as well maintenance program will be applied.
