KAHRAMAA invites entries for Renewable Energy Initiative competition

1

Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA)  has invited entries first time under a new category for ‘Best Renewable Energy Initiative Competition’ as part of its National Program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency- Tarsheed.

The entries will be accepted/uploaded on KAHRAMAA website until April 15, 2015 using the link www.km.com.qa/tarsheed. All invited entries must comply with Qatar’s moral values and its National identity.

The recently launched competition by KAHRAMAA’s Conservation and Energy Efficiency Department is open to all sectors including residential. It aims at supporting the development of innovative technologies and business models that promote renewable energy, energy efficiency and help in cutting carbon emissions for Qatar’s sustainable future.

It is also aimed at promoting environmental awareness and inculcating culture of efficient usage of the natural resources in order to have better life and to achieve the slogan of Tarsheed, “Keep Qatar Pulsing” in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.

KAHRAMAA is committed to its responsibility for providing sustainable resources for electricity and water for the benefits of the nation and for improving the quality life for the generations to come in line with QNV 2030 and NDS 2011-2016 which call for environmental management and protection aimed at ensuring harmony and consistency with economic and social development.

The National program for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed) which was launched as a campaign in year 2012 under the patronage of His Highness the Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al- Thani, is marching towards achieving good result. The prime target of Tarsheed is to reduce the per capita water and electricity consumption in Qatar by 35% & 20%, respectively up to 2017.

On the renewable energy initiatives, KAHRAMAA’s approach has moved beyond keeping an open outlook on emerging new technologies in solar to embracing and formulating plans and implementing new projects. KAHRAMAA has undertaken the project as a leading step towards the gradual adoption of more sustainable techniques to produce 200 MWs by 2020 which will be equivalent to 2% of the then total power generation in Qatar.

The District Cooling Services (DCS) department at KAHRAMAA which came into existence to implement QNV 2030 has also focused on energy and water synergies and efficiencies by promoting district cooling technologies, policies and activities in Qatar.

District Cooling is a cost effective and environment-friendly technology which uses 30 to 40 percent less energy than conventional refrigeration system, resulting heavy reduction in CO2 emissions.  As the technology needs more water , Qatar’s Permanent Water Resources Committee (PWRC) has made it mandatory to use Treated Sewage Effluent (TSE) in all existing and upcoming DC projects which in turn saves desalinated water.

Winners will be announced and honored at Tarsheed 3rd Annual Celebration to be held on 22nd April 2015.
